Having programs automatically open when you start Windows XP is handy. It’s nice to turn on your computer and have applications, such as e-mail, open while you’re busy pouring your first cup of coffee. If you want a program or application to launch itself every time you turn on your PC, follow these steps.

If you make too many things start automatically, it might take a minute or two before you can get to work because you have to wait for all of these programs and applications to load. Don’t overfill your Startup folder — use it just for the programs you need most often.
1Right-click Start.
The Start button is the green button located at the bottom-left corner of your screen.
2Click Explore.
When you right-click the Start button, a menu will pop up from which you can click Explore.
3Locate and open the folder where the application is located.
Look for whichever application it is that you want to automatically start with Windows XP.
4Select the application.
Just click the application to select it.
5Drag the item to the Startup folder in the Folders list on the left.
Check under Owner, Start Menu, Programs in the list.
6Double-click the Startup folder.
You should see the program listed.
7Click the Close button in the upper-right corner.
When you finish moving programs into the Startup folder, the programs you moved will now open every time Windows XP is started.
You can stop a program or application from launching automatically by navigating to the Startup folder navigating, right-clicking the program or application, and choosing Delete. This doesn’t delete the application from your PC, but just stops it from launching itself. You’ll have to open it manually, from this point forward.
